What you will need

An extremely over used statement in Montana, “If you don’t like the weather, wait a minute,” unfortunately it is spot on, so we’ll continue to use it.  When planning a trip to Montana, whether in August or November, always packs for the elements.

Rods / Fishing Gear
This is a very common question with guests and never a debate amongst guides. A five weight rod is required to fish the Missouri.  Missouri fish are strong and do their best to break you off or get into your backing with each run.    I have seen many an angler get beat up by an 18’ rainbow with a 3 weight rod.  The fish can be landed on a 3 or 4 weight but usually don’t make the return trip back into the river due to sheer exhaustion.  The wind can and will blow and not always at your back.  This point can’t be stressed enough, don’t ruin a great trip by being under gunned and not be able to punch a cast into the wind because your 5 weight is sitting safely in the rack at home.
